Today, British-Brazilian artist Liana Flores is proud to release her debut album, Flower of the soul, which is out now via Verve Records (The Velvet Underground, Astrud Gilberto, Kurt Vile, Arooj Aftab), released in the UK in partnership with Fiction Records (The Cure, Kate Bush, Kae Tempest).
Liana has always had an ear for the special moments in music. Growing up in a small town in South Norfolk, she would pick out melodies from songs and play them on her keyboard by ear, before starting piano lessons in primary school and eventually trying her hand at guitar from around age 18. She was adventurous from the beginning, learning the bossa nova songs she loved from her mother’s native Brazil in her later teens out of love for the “harmonic language” of the genre.

Blending elements of British folk, classic jazz and Brazilian pop, Flower of the soul is a release that explores transformation in all of its forms and puts a spotlight on a truly singular talent. Liana says, “Flower of the soul explores themes of nature and impermanence, the tension & connection between humans and the natural world, and what changes and remains throughout times of transformation.”

“Butterflies,” featuring Tim Bernardes – a member of Brazilian rock band O Terno and a Latin Grammy nominee – is one of the most integral parts of the record, a moment of reflection that combines the album’s core themes. Liana shares, “’Butterflies’ is a bossa nova expressing a state of in-between-ness when one phase of life ends and another begins. It was an honour to be joined by Tim Bernardes, whose vocals and guitar playing are a beautiful addition to the track.”

The release of Flower of the soul was preceded by “Nightvisions”, “I wish for the rain” and “Orange coloured day” – all of which received critical acclaim. Flores has also announced a run of Rough Trade in-stores across the UK this July, adding to her already sold out album release tour.

Flower of the soul is out now on all digital platforms, with CD and vinyl, including an exclusive limited edition ‘summer berry’ vinyl, out 12 July.
